Facing the viewer with solemn composure, the Greek goddess of health holds the serpent of Asclepius—an enduring emblem of medicine and healing. Klimt’s richly patterned robes and flowing decorative forms reveal the unmistakable visual language of Viennese Art Nouveau.
The original Medicine was destroyed in 1945. This art print has been produced from a carefully prepared public-domain colour reproduction of its celebrated surviving Hygieia detail.
